The Materials:

This ALD x New Balance 990v5 incorporates a premium mix of materials that appear in a superb color palette that screams fall and winter. All of it comes to together to create one of the hottest New Balance releases of the entire 2019 calendar year.

Suede: The hunter green suede on this shoe’s upper is what really makes this shoe stand out in my opinion. Not only does it look rich, but it feels amazing as well.

The texture of the material isn’t as nappy as some other suede used on other New Balance models I’ve reviewed, but it works for this model.

Mesh: First off, the navy blue color of the mesh pairs perfectly with the hunter green suede that covers the shoe’s upper. It’s definitely a more understated colorway compared to the 990v2 model that released along side this shoe, but I appreciate the subdued aesthetic.

The texture of the mesh used on this 990v5 model is sturdy and has a nice sheen that screams quality, but also adds more breathability to the shoe.

Synthetic/3M: The dark blue accent trim on the shoe’s upper is comprised of a synthetic material that adds another layer of color diversity to the shoes colorway.

There’s not much special we can say about it, but it’s a welcomed addition to the shoe as it does add a bit more visual depth to the shoe and improves the shoe’s overall look.

Special Touches: Even though this is technically a collab shoe between brands, there aren’t any over-the-top design features that make it stand out from other general release variants.

Instead, ALD and New Balance opt for more subtle tweaks to adorn the shoe. Small

the Construction:

From my experience, New Balance’s “Made in the USA” models like the 990v5, are constructed extremely well compared to other shoes that are manufactured abroad. This can be attributed to the company’s strong commitment to experienced American workers that are employed at their factory located in Boston, MA.

The craftsmanship from which each shoe is made is evident as soon as you open the box. All of the stitching is straight and clean and the shoe has the nice retro-runner shape that most love.

As far as durability is concerned, I have no doubt that shoe will be capable of withstanding anything anyone could throw at it. I’ve personally owned numerous pairs of 990s and all have help up well over time.

Sneaker Sizing & Comfort:

The Sizing:

Generally speaking, New Balance shoes have a generous fit right out of the box and this can also be said for the New Balance 990v5.

I’m a big guy who has fairly chunky feet and I’m always pleased with how the 990v5 feels in toe area straight out of the box.

Of course everyone’s foot type and fit preference are different, so I’m cautious about give sizing advice, but I generally suggest going true to size with 990s.

On the other hand, going down half a size might work for those with narrower feet or those who prefer a more snug and secure fit.

The Cushioning:

The New Balance 990v5 is one of the brand’s flagship running/lifestyle shoes that dates back to the early 1980s when the original New Balance 990 running shoe was released.

Fast forward to today, and the 990v5 still continues the models tradition of having superior cushioning, stability, and flexibility.

In other reviews we’ve mentioned how this shoe’s ENCAP midsole isn’t a soft and bouncy as Nike React or Adidas Boost, but maintains its plush feel much longer and becomes more comfortable with each wear.

If you’re looking for a comfortable shoe that you will look to wear everyday, this could be it. One step in these and you’ll be hooked.

Even at the a retail price of $189, this sneaker is a tremendous value and worth every penny.

Not only is the shoe made here within the US, but it’s made of superior materials that are second to none when compared to the competition.

Also, as mentioned earlier in the review, I’ve owned a few pair of New Balance 990s and they’ve all withstood the test of time which means you’ll get plenty of of well-cushioned wears out of this shoe.

The Wearability:

Earlier in the review, I mentioned how the shoes understated looks worked well with the silhouette. In addition, the shoe’s color palette makes them a very versatile shoe to style as well.

The navy and green color combination is fairly neutral overall and should instantly pair well with anyone’s existing wardrobe.

All in all, if you’re looking for a nice comfortable shoe that can go with just about anything in your closet, this is a great option to consider.

The look is an acquired taste for some, but is considered a clean, timeless classic to those who are deeply entrenched in retro sneaker culture.
