Sizing Guide: How Does The Nike Air Trainer 1 Fit?
Thinking about buying a pair of Nike Air Trainer 1s but not sure how they fit? Check out this helpful sizing guide based on real-world experience and information created to help you pick the perfect size.
the quick answer
The Nike Air Trainer 1 runs true-to-size.
Generally speaking, the Nike Air Trainer 1 fits comfortably at true-to-size. For that reason, I’d recommend going with your most common Nike size when purchasing this shoe, but please continue reading for more helpful specialized insights.
A Quick Disclaimer
I always like to preface my sizing suggestions by saying that there is no “perfect shoe size” but rather a “size range” that works best for most people when it comes to sneakers. For me, the US11.5/12 size range is what I consistently purchase regardless of brand or shoe silhouette.
As you continue reading, understand that this “size range” assumption will serve as the foundation of my suggestions, so enjoy the article and I hope it helps!
My Experience With The Nike Air Trainer 1
I usually wear a US12 in most Nike sneakers so I blindly I decided to go with that size when ordering a pair of the OG “Chlorophylls” that released in 2022. Prior to the shoe arriving, I was concerned that the shoe may be a bit big due to its “bulky” profile, but I was wrong.
The toebox was roomy from a width standpoint, but the shoe’s length was just right. Since I mostly wear my sneakers untied, I prefer a rather snug fit to avoid excess foot movement in the shoe when walking and the size 12 works perfectly based on my needs. After wearing the shoe for a month, I can say that the fit of the size 12 has only gotten better with each wear
Ultimately, I know offering sizing advice can be a bit challenging due to the many variances in everyone’s foot shape and fit preference, but I would still like to offer some tips for those with wide or narrow feet in the section ahead.
for those with Narrow Feet
Stay True-To-Size.
If you consider yourself to have narrow feet, you can easily go with your most common Nike shoe size and be just fine. The only time going down a half-size should be a consideration is if you’re in-between sizes and prefer a snug fit.
for those with Wider Feet
Go True-To-Size Or Half-Size Up
I believe those with wider feet would be okay staying true to size, but if you prefer a roomier fit then going up a half-size would also be okay. As mentioned earlier, the Nike Air Trainer 1 does have somewhat of a roomier toe area which lends itself to being a great shoe for “widefooters”.
The Shoe’s History
Another Tinker Hatfield creation, the Nike Air Trainer 1 was originally released back in 1987 and was another iconic silhouette from the designer and brand. It revolutionized the sneaker world with it s bold design elements and cutting edge innovative flair.
The Air Trainer 1 was the first cross-trainer ever made that was designed to combine the functionality of multiple shoe-types into one. The shoe’s “one-shoe fits all” design approach made it one of the most popular shoes of its era and was worn by many athletes such as tennis star, John McEnroe and multi-sport legend, Bo Jackson just to name a few.
Is The Air Trainer 1 Still Relevant Today?
Although not the most popular retro shoe in Nike’s lineup, the Air Trainer 1 is still beloved by many and holds a special place within the hearts of minds of many sneakerheads both young and old.
Folks that love the shoe, value its storied history and eye-catching design that has clearly withstood the test of time.
Over the years, OG retros and reimagined iterations of the iconic silhouette have added to the shoe’s mystique and pushed the Air Trainer 1 Legacy forward in a way that connects it to a new younger generation.
How to clean the Nike Air Trainer 1?
For the most part, keeping your pair of Air Trainer 1s won’t be much of a challenge. Most pairs feature a combination of leather, unbuckle, and synthetic materials which are able to be cleaned with most shoes cleaning products on the market today.

Despite its age, the shoe’s cross-trainer DNA also makes it a viable option for gym use as well. While their may be newer options that offer modern footwear tech, the Air Trainer 1 can still get the job done at the gym for a potentially lower cost.
