An On-Feet Look At the New Balance 998 "Spring Fling"

Come take a closer look at the newly released New Balance 998 “Spring Fling”. This is a “US Made” retro running shoe from New Balance that is combines a muted color palette with premium materials. Watch this exclusive unboxing video and get our first impressions below.

Initial Impressions:

Here are a few of my initial thoughts after unboxing this New Balance 998 “Spring Fling”. A full written review of this shoe will be posted after I’ve had more time to analyze the shoe.

  • One of the first things that jumped out at me when I seen this shoe listed on NewBalance.com was the lower retail price of $159.99 which is $20 under the normal retail price. I’m not sure why this is, but it is indeed something I won’t complain about.

  • The images online just don’t do this shoe’s materials any justice. Of course the suede, is as soft and premium as ever, the canvas is a special touch, but the standout of this shoe is its leather. It’s almost unreal how soft it is. It actually feels like the leather used on a premium jacket.

  • Another thing to note about the suede is that it is un-died, which means no chemicals were used to change the color which is a more environmentally conscious means of production. This may not matter to some, but I’m all for New Balance paying attention to sustainability.

  • This is the first New Balance 998 that I’ve owned that has a reinforced toe-box. The suede that wraps around the toe has some type of sturdy reinforcement to help retain the shoe’s shape. I’m not completely turned off by this, but I’d prefer if New Balance doesn’t continue this trend.

Where To Buy:

This is a shoe that I’ve only seen on NewBalance.com which means that it was probably produced in much mor limited quantities than other iterations of the 998 that are sold by many other retailers.

As a matter of fact, there are only a few sizes available for purchase at the time that I’m writing this.
