HOw does the nb 550 fit?
The New Balance 550 runs slightly larger than true-to-size.
The New Balance 500 fits a little long and slightly narrow in the to, so going with your most common New Balance size will be the safest bet for most buyers. This may mean going down a half-size from your normal Nike or Adidas size, but keep reading for more special insights and sizing suggestions based on your foot type and fit preference.
Watch:
The Return of the 550
The 80s basketball sneaker has become the most highly-coveted segment within the sneaker industry and New Balance is taking full advantage of the moment.
The Boston brand’s 550 model was all but forgotten prior to it’s return to the spotlight back in 2020 with the release of the Aimé Leon Dore colorways that were a smash hit.

Since the ALD release, a plethora of more accessible in-line colorways have released and many sneakerheads and casual sneaker buyers alike have started to take notice and appreciate the throwback silhouette’s vibes.
IS THE NEW BALANCE 550 FOR YOU?
If you’re into the retro aesthetic that’s in style right now, then the New Balance 550 should definitely be on your wishlist or at least on your radar.
More affordable and accessible than the uberly-popular Air Jordan 1, the 550 is an alternative that is far less of a pain to acquire on the retail market.
Coming in at close to $100 retail, what should you expect to get with the 550?
Materials: Most releases offer a upper primarily comprised of a smooth leather and possible accents that aren’t the best quality, but are more than adequate considering the price point.
Comfort: You can’t expect a whole lot from a 80s basketball sneaker when it comes to comfort, but surprisingly, the 550 is probably one of the better cushioned retro models offered within the segment.
ALL SIZES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
I always like to preface the sizing suggestion section of the post by saying that it is my belief that there is no one “perfect shoe size” but actually a “size range” that works best for most people. For me, it’s the US11.5/12 size range that I consistently purchase regardless of brand or silhouette.
With that being said, it is this “size range” assumption that will serve as the foundation of my suggestions. This is important to keep in mind as you continue reading.
for those with Narrow Feet
Go Half-Size Down.
Buying true to size will provide a rather roomy fit for narrow footers, but for those who prefer a snug 1-to-1 fit, going down a half-size will be the better option and will reduce toe-creasing as well.
for those with Wider Feet
Go True-To-Size Or Half-Size Up
Most retro basketball shoes from New Balance are wide-footer friendly and this is also true for the 550 model. Going true-to-size will suffice for those with wider feet, but if you like to wear thicker socks you may consider going a half-size up.
now it’s your turn
